A Day at a Time A Day at a Time A Day at a Time A Day at a Time A Day at a Time A Day at a Time

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to jump on here and write about some of my adventures. For the past couple of weeks it has just been go, go, go. Let me start with a trip I took a couple weeks ago.

It all began with what was supposed to be a two night stay out in Reno. Grand Sierra was offering a two night stay with a free slot tournament entry. Plus, Grand Sierra always gives away these weird gifts on Sundays (this time it was a thermos and travel mug set). I never expect to win much from sot tournaments because there really isn’t skill involved, just button smashing. But you can’t beat the price of free!

So I checked in and used up my $25 in freeplay with nothing to show for it. The trip was off to a slow start but I wasn’t going to let it deter me. I headed to the poker room and tried to run up my bankroll before my slot tournament time. Things quickly headed south when my trip 5’s were out-kicked and I donked off some more chips on a busted flush draw. You could see how I was getting a little tilty. I needed to clear my head so I walked away and played my tournament round. I did alright and had a chance at winning some freeplay. I went to the bar to get a drink and play a little video keno. I hit a 6 out of 7 repairing my bankroll a little bit. After some delicious fish tacos at the Cantina I decided to have a few more drinks and play a little more keno.

Full of wonderful food and whiskey I decided to call it a night. I don’t like to keep playing poker if I’m not in the right mindset. I needed to reset and try again the next day.

The next day began with optimism and hope. I began with a Stoli Bloody Mary and was ready to finish off the slot tournament. I ended up with a  decent score but wouldn’t know the results until later that day. I was feeling the urge for some sushi and knew I had to head over to Peppermill‘s Oceano for that all-you-can-eat sushi. The lunch special is a lot cheaper than the dinner price and it’s the same menu. If you get the chance and you love sushi, this place will definitely hit the spot.

Amazing! Lots of fresh, tasty fish topped off with some decadent gelato. I decided to run down to South Lake Tahoe to use a little freeplay I had. Hard Rock and MontBleu always give me a little. A beautiful drive through the Nevada countryside and along the Lake Tahoe coast. I pulled into the Hard Rock Casino parking structure and felt excited about the $50 in free play they were giving me. I blew through the $50 and won $10. I felt kind of misled with the freeplay but I’ll never complain about it. Then I went over to MontBleu and didn’t win over there either. I did notice that Third Eye Blind and Dashboard Confessional would be playing there the next night.

So I walked over to Harveys and jumped in their 3-6 limit game to just relax for a little bit. I sunk $100 into the game and watched everyone call to the river and suck out on me. Frustrated and deflated, I drove back to Reno to try and brush off the day I was having. I knew I couldn’t let running bad get into my head and make me play subpar poker.

I got back to Grand Sierra and found out I won some freeplay from the slot tournament. Using that freeplay, I won $100 in video keno and used that for my buy-in at the 1-2 no-limit game. I ran that $100 to $300 and decided to stop while I was ahead. It was a good game and I didn’t want to end on a bad note.

When I got up the next day, I wasn’t ready to call it quits. I still had money in my pocket and there was a show that evening in South Lake. Before I ran over there, I went downstairs to hit a few balls at the driving the driving range.

The sun was shining and I just wanted to enjoy the day. After 85 balls, it was time to head down to South Lake. Harveys let me know they would put me up for the night and I knew I could get some free food over at Hard Rock. Once I got there and dumped my stuff, I made my way to FireBreak for a big, juicy burger.

I usually don’t like the BBQ sauce poured on my burger so I always get it on the side. Crispy, salty garlic fries are the perfect compliment to a succulent, medium-rare burger. So much food!

I went back across the street and picked up my ticket to see Third Eye Blind and Dashboard Confessional and it was time to enjoy my last night on my trip. I had grown up with Third Eye Blind and couldn’t wait to see them live.

Dashboard Confessional opened the show up and brought a lot of energy and got the crowd ready for the main event. Reminiscent of days in high school and teenage love, Dashboard took us back with Screaming Infidelities, Vindicated, and of course, Hands Down. Then it was time…

Third Eye Blind filled the room with so much 90’s love that you couldn’t help but be swept up in the performance. Playing as if it was their last show, Third Eye Blind brought the energy and showmanship you would expect from a band that symbolized days of confusion, youth, freedom, and self-discovery. Seeing the crowd come together  for Motorcycle Drive-By, Jumper, How’s It Going to Be, and lastly Semi-Charmed Life. It was a beautiful end to trip. With all of the ups and downs that come with life, it’s always important to enjoy the moment and not get to worked up with what’s to come and what you can’t control. It was a wonderful trip and I was ready to head back home to lay low for a couple days.

Thanks for the memories Reno and Tahoe. I’m sure I’ll make my way out to your hills in the near future. Until next time.

A Shot in the Dark A Shot in the Dark A Shot in the Dark A Shot in the Dark A Shot in the Dark A Shot in the Dark

It has been crazy hot over here in Sacramento and I needed to get away from the heat. I went to Reno recently and noticed that it wasn’t too much cooler up there so I decided to try Tahoe instead. No casino was offering me any free nights but I was not going to be deterred. I packed a small bag and decided to just go for it with only $5 in cash. Sometimes your best adventures aren’t planned.

You never really get tired of the views on the beautiful drive up to South Lake Tahoe. Majestic mountains covered in stunning greenery. After a couple hours up the road, I pulled into the Hard Rock Casino parking lot and started calling around. After getting hit with a few rates and whatnot, I found what I was looking for at Harveys. They were willing to give me a free night and I couldn’t wait since I had never stayed there (plus, that’s where the best poker room is in South Lake).

After checking in, it was time to get some food. I was feeling the urge for some pizza and I had plenty of comp to use so I decided to hit up Straw Hat. I couldn’t decide on the toppings and so I went with “The Works.” Just thinking about it now makes my mouth water.

That pizza was loaded with pepperoni, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, and olives. Delicious, crispy crust and melty cheese hit the spot. Amazing!

After lunch it was time to blow the freeplay that the casinos were giving me. Hard Rock gave me $5 that was gone in about 3 minutes with nothing to show for it. Then I crossed the street to use the $5 that MontBleu gave me. Bam! I hit a 6 out of 7 in keno which makes me $100 richer.

I thought I was going to have to hit up the ATM when I got there because I only had $5 but now my wallet had a little padding. I waited for a free cocktail and decided to head back to Harveys to hit the poker room.

That game was crazy. There were a bunch of players just calling and raising all the way to the river with air. A bunch of them kept sucking out flushes and straights and it was just getting frustrating. I broke even and decided to take a little break. I needed to get away from the table for a little while and get some dinner. The Hard Rock Cafe seemed like a good place to try out in Harveys. When I try out new places I like to get their specialty items. I set my mind on the Local Legendary Burger and it was a tasty bite.

It was a burger patty made out of shrimp and crayfish. I’m a big fan of seafood and was a little weary about this seafood delivery system but it did not disappoint. It was an interesting texture but packed full of flavor. Definitely try it out if you swing by there.

I made my way back to the poker room to try my hand again at the game. This time I was running a little better but the game was getting short handed as the night went on. After many drinks and good conversation, it was time to call it a night.

Working on the website in the morning

I got up ready to take the day on. I had to be back in town later so I needed to get some breakfast. I remember that there was a nice little cafe in the basement of Harrah’s and knew I needed a good hangover cure.

Nothing like some eggs and corned beef hash to get rid of that belly churn. You know, that feeling like your stomach is churning paired with dehydration headache. Good ole comfort food with a big glass of water. Before I was going to head back to Sacramento, I wanted to stop by the lake and just take in the views.

Stroll on the docks in South Lake Tahoe

A gorgeous summer day out in South Lake. I wish I had a little more time out there but there is always more to do. I only had a little bit of time by the lake before it was back to reality. Until next time Tahoe. Hopefully I’ll run into you at the keno machines in MontBleu.

Silver Legacy Resort Casino Review Reno, Nevada

Silver Legacy Resort Casino Review Reno, Nevada

Doin’ it right in downtown Reno! The Silver Legacy is a beautiful resort in the heart of downtown Reno. This casino has a dignified, mining town feel to it with all of the modern amenities that you would want out of a casino resort. It is connected to other properties in the downtown area but we’re going to focus on this gem in Reno’s downtown crown. And we’re off!

The Room – 6/10

Hotel room at the Silver Legacy in Reno, Nevada

I walked into this room and just thought “Eh.” There isn’t too much to say about the room here at the Silver Legacy. The room was clean and everything that you needed was there. It was pretty bland without any real decor or theme. I did enjoy the red and black color scheme. The beds were comfortable and offered a nice place to lay your head. Also a plus, there was no tray of garbage that charges you a fortune if you move anything. There was plenty of room for my things and it didn’t feel crowded. It was still a little dated but I didn’t mind the room. A pretty standard, simple room. Not too shabby Silver Legacy.

Before I could even unpack from Reno, I was right back out there in the warm Nevada hills. This time was for a little bash called the Rockabilly Riot! There were plenty of souped up rides, pin-up girls, and hip sounds. Add in plenty of drinks and food and you have yourself a nice little shindig.

When I pulled into Reno in the afternoon sun, part of Virginia Street was closed with the cars parked on both sides and street vendors were all ready for the people. I checked in at the Silver Legacy and needed to get some food. I figured it would be a good idea to try out the buffet here and this was my first mistake. That buffet was pretty bad. There was a very small selection of bland, flavorless food. I did have prime rib and it was alright, I’ve definitely had better. The shrimp was a little light in color and didn’t really taste that great. It looked good, but my mouth didn’t agree with my eyes. All in all, I wouldn’t recommend this place.

After this mouth disaster, I went back to the room to get ready for the evening. I knew I needed to wait for the sun to go down before venturing out onto the street. After a quick shower and getting my hair done, I hit the streets and made the scene.

Ready for the evening to take me wherever

There wasn’t too much going on the first night. By the time I got out there, the cars were pulling away and the vendors were wrapping up for the night. I just shrugged and made my way over to the ElDorado to play some poker. The game wasn’t going too well so I just went back to the Silver Legacy. There is this Twilight Zone slot machine that I always have to play whenever I go to the Silver Legacy and this was the first good decision on this trip. She took me to the zone and welcomed me back to Reno.

Twilight Zone Slot Machine Winning

This game has a lot of little side things that you can hit while playing along with some cooler mini-games throughout. Definitely try it out. You know I’m not a huge advocate for slot machines but sometimes you just have to treat yoself and play the games you like to play.

I started the next day with a quick trip to the pool. That pool was tiny. It looked like a blue hole in the roof of the 4th floor and it was only three and a half feet deep. I waded into the giant bathtub and tried to lay out in the sun but I just couldn’t beat the sun. The sun was just beating down and telling me to “Git!” I listened and went back to the room to prepare for day two. I put some new threads on and I was feeling pretty good. I hit the streets and got to check out the beauties on the road.

Reno was welcoming everyone to the Rockabilly Riot! I was taking it all in and trying to stay out of the sun.

Reno enjoying the Rockabilly Riot! and the sunshine

And let me tell you, there was a lot of sun. The cars and people were gleaming in the sunshine.

Rows of parked beautiful cars at the Rockabilly Riot!

But after the sun went down, life got a lot sweeter out there. More people came out to play and there were plenty of sweet tunes to draw them in. There was a pretty amazing band called Los High Tops and that singer could get it. She was killin’ that bass and didn’t miss a verse.

I went back to the Silver Legacy for some dinner at the Pearl Oyster Bar and Grill. This place definitely redeemed the Silver Legacy in terms of dining. I ordered the jambalaya and it was cooked perfectly. A nice mixture of sausage, chicken, and seafood with some sourdough bread on the side definitely hit the spot. I was full of good food and good vibes. As the night wound down I played a little more poker and broke even. With all the drinks and good company, I would say it was a nice little getaway. If you get a chance, definitely check out the Rockabilly Riot! next year. Reno always has some cool events going on especially during the Summer. I’m sure I’ll be back soon enough. Good stuff Reno!
