See You at the Final Table See You at the Final Table See You at the Final Table

So I had the pleasure of playing the daily tournament over at one of my favorite local card rooms, Capitol Casino. It’s a low buy-in tournament every weekday at 10 A.M. There was a pretty good turnout (about 60).

Capitol Casino starting tournament chips

I started off slow, just folding a lot of hands and trying to get a feel for the table and the other players. Then I hit a couple flops and decided to start taking down some pots. The blinds had reached 100/200 when ran into AA’s in the cutoff. There was a raise to 675 from under-the-gun and a call when I shoved about 3.8k. I got 2 callers and had them covered, knocking one of them out of the tournament with the other rebuying. A few hands later I ran into QQ’s with someone shoving before me. I called and went to the races with another fella comin’ in too. I knocked out 2 more and decided to ride this big stack for a while. Our table broke down and it was time for the first break. I took a quick walk around, had a little coffee, and checked out the action at the cash games. The cash games had pretty good action for 11 A.M. Startin’ the grind early…

I was at about 24k when we came back from the first break and I was ready to get back into it. Now there were no more rebuys or add-ons and it was time to go to work. First couple hands I hit KK’s and pushed pretty hard pre-flop pushing everyone off. I was playing cautious, trying not to give my big stack away. I did run into a rough beat when I pushed with 2 pair against a baby flush that someone had. The blinds move up so quickly in these small tournaments that you really have to pick your spots carefully. The small stacks are just looking for a hand to shove and double or triple up. After protecting my blinds a few times with JJ’s, QQ’s, and 55’s, we were sitting on the bubble. The house took a vote and everyone agreed to pay out another seat to speed things up. After that, two people shoved and we were final tabled. I was glad my big stack had gotten me to the final table. Then it was time for a little break.

Outside of Capitol Casino Sacramento, California

I stepped outside for a little fresh air before gettin’ back to the table. There were a couple short stacks, including me, at the table and the mood seemed pretty light at the table. The blinds were 2k/4k and I only had 11k in my stack. One of the big stacks gave all of his chips away in 2 hands and I was hoping to move up a little more in the money. A short stack was all-in when he entered the blind and I looked down to find KTo. There was a caller and then I shoved the rest of my stack. The caller caught a straight on the river knocking both of us out. Luckily, I had more chips so they placed me higher in the money. 7th place. Not a bad way to start the day. Had some fun and earned a little lunch money. If you’re ever in the Sacramento area and you’re looking for action, definitely check out Capitol Casino. A great local spot with plenty of games to choose from.

I hope to see you at the final table sometime. Good luck!

Montbleu Casino Resort and Spa Review South Lake Tahoe

Montbleu Casino Resort and Spa Review South Lake Tahoe

Let’s just jump into this. I had the pleasure of visiting the Montbleu this past weekend to see the newly renovated rooms. Nestled in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, this beautiful property brings class, luxury, and comfort together. So here we go!

The Room – 8/10

Hotel room at the Montbleu

I love the newly renovated rooms. There are only a couple things I can call them out on. First, I loved the rustic feel they incorporated with the classic decor. The sliding bathroom door was pretty cool but the door didn’t have a locking mechanism, or at least I couldn’t figure it out. I’m pretty sure it didn’t though. I liked how big the shower was but there was no tub, you all know how much I like my baths. The shower was very nice though. The rest of the bathroom was great. They leave you some $3 water if you’re into that. The bed was comfortable and the view is always amazing in Tahoe. The Montbleu did a great job playing off their outdated rooms with their classic look and feel but this new renovation was much needed. They did a great job updating without losing the appeal they’ve always had. A clean, beautiful, and comfortable room. Great job with the new rooms Montbleu!

Headin’ for the Hills Headin’ for the Hills Headin’ for the Hills Headin’ for the Hills Headin’ for the Hills Headin’ for the Hills

I just had to get outta the city this past weekend. I decided to head out to South Lake to hit the hills and the good ole MontBleu. I couldn’t have picked a better day to head out there either. I packed a small bag, filled my tank, and turned on some 90’s hits on Spotify. After singing some Semi-Charmed Life and some other tunes, I arrived at the MontBleu.

I always love the Art Deco feel and style of the MontBleu. They do a great job of offering modern amenities without losing any class. I checked in and admired their newly renovated rooms. They did a much needed renovation on their property and it was definitely worth it. Then I headed back downstairs and asked the concierge about some hikes nearby. I thanked her for her suggestion and began my journey.

It was a little crazy drive up a windy road before I got to Cascade Falls trail head. There were quite a few people with the same idea up there. I got some good shots of the views while I was up there.

The hike itself didn’t look too difficult but I definitely underestimated that altitude. I met a few four legged friends along the path but it was a beautiful hike. I’m glad I made it out of the city and the casinos to get some fresh air. Sometimes it’s good to get out and see the world to gain some perspective. After climbing for a while I had to take a breather and just take in the view.

Then I headed back down the trail and back to the trail head. I heard a guy yelling a girls name and then I saw a bunch of search and rescue down there. I felt bad. I hope they found her…

Some of my other friends got to South Lake so I headed back to MontBleu. We had a couple drinks and then decided to get some dinner. Cafe del Soul has a great steak dinner special. I was a little tipsy so I decided to replace my vegetables with another kind of potato. Mmm, who doesn’t want two kinds of potatoes?

I went back to the room and enjoyed a piece of chocolate cake and coffee while getting ready for the evening. The rich, dense cake went perfectly with a hot cup of coffee. After a couple shows on Food Network, it was time to go down and hit it!

I had to walk around to avoid the food coma. I played a few machines and enjoyed the crisp, evening Tahoe air. We hit up Harrah’s and Harveys where I came up a little. I tried to jump into a poker game but the wait was a little long and it was getting late. After a few more drinks, I decided to call it a night. On the way back to Mont Bleu this little place called Dotty’s caught my eye. I went in, got a player’s card, and found myself playing some video keno. After a couple Negra Modelos and winning another $100, it was time for bed. Went back to Mont Bleu and wound down with some more Cutthroat Kitchen. It was a good night and this is a picture of me faded.

Woke up, ate some breakfast, and headed back home. Glad to see you again South Lake, thanks for being so good to me. Until next time, see you at the top!

Peppermill Resort and Casino Review Reno, Nevada

Peppermill Resort and Casino Review Reno, Nevada

Just made it back from a short trip out to Reno, Nevada and I will be reviewing the Peppermill Casino and Resort. This is a beautiful, Italian themed resort tucked away from downtown Reno. I will be reviewing the Peppermill based on the room, their restaurants, the casino, the amenities provided, the overall ambience, value, family-friendliness, and service from the staff. Run it!

The Room – 9/10

Peppermill Reno Hotel Room

After a short walk down the halls adorned with Romanesque paintings and soft opera playing, I arrived at my room. The room was clean and decorated well without seeming cheesy. The room was definitely themed to resemble Italian class. The only thing I really didn’t like about the room was the tray of garbage that charges anything you move (unless you put it back within 45 seconds). The fridge was filled with the same stuff with the same sensors. Not cool… Other than that, the room was pretty nice. Great view of the mountains, nice flat screen TV, vanity/desk that can be used to get work done or for yo lady to put her face on (although she’ll probably take up that whole bathroom), and comfortable furniture and bed. The room was clean, comfortable, and nice.

Hit the Ground Runnin’ Hit the Ground Runnin’ Hit the Ground Runnin’ Hit the Ground Runnin’ Hit the Ground Runnin’ Hit the Ground Runnin’

As soon I returned from Virginia, I was out the door again. I had time to do a load of laundry, hopped in the car, and I was at it again.

A few of my friends wanted to head out to Reno and I couldn’t pass up a chance to hit the felt. We booked a couple nights over at the Peppermill and we were ready to hit it. Peppermill always brings me back to Tuscany and a place of luxury. After checking in, we were all pretty hungry so we hit up Cafe Milano for their amazing prime rib special ($10.99 for huge, amazing prime rib).

Then it was time to try to walk off that giant slab of dead cow. We made a few rounds through the casino and had a couple drinks at a couple machines. I was feeling the urge to get some cards in the air and I ended up in the evening poker tournament.

The field was pretty small but I ended up short stacked with pocket 5’s and my caller’s AQ caught up quickly, busting me out of the tournament. I decided to have a couple more drinks while playing some video keno. My friends found me and we threw a few back together.

Then I found an empty Pai Gow table and figured this would be a cheap way to get free drinks. One after another, the empty glasses were replaced with Glenlivet on the rocks. The dealers were friendly and open, making us feel welcome and comfortable. There were no topics of conversation that were off the table. After my judgement was cloudy, I made it back to the room for some much needed water and short jam session. Then it was lights out…

I woke up with that headachey, stomach churny feeling and knew I needed greasy food. I headed back to Cafe Milano to see what they were servin’ up and I spotted “The Conquest” on the menu. I enjoy any sandwich that presents itself as a challenge so I accepted. Generous portion of warm roast beef with melted cheddar cheese on top, sautèed peppers, bacon… that bacon, on sourdough Parmesan bread. Oh, and them waffle fries. So crispy, with the perfect amount of salt. Oof!

That was exactly what I needed. I felt my power replenished and I was restored to my former glory.

After recovery, we headed over to the Grand Sierra to use up some free play. Then off to Atlantis to see what was crackin’ under the sea. It’s always nice to do the rounds in Reno and get a little change of scenery. Used up our free play there and then back to the Peppermill. We couldn’t decide on what to eat, so I had a couple of the free sandwiches and soup in the poker room. I jumped in the 3-6 limit game and hit quad deuces that bumped me up a little with the high hand bonus. I left the poker room, doubling my buy-in, and met back up with the fellas. We had a couple drinks, chilled at the Fireside Lounge, and then hit the breakfast specials after midnight.

We were seated at 11:54 P.M. and had no idea about the wait that was about to ensue. This woman took our orders at 12:10 A.M. Oh my damn. We didn’t see food until 12:55 A.M. I was pissed. We spoke with the manager and gave her the business and she took off more than half the bill. I was cool with that and that garbage server didn’t get a tip (I have a feeling she won’t be working there long). We payed for the food and called it a night. All in all, it was a nice quick get away. Glad I could share this with you all. See you by the fire.
